US-Iran talks face major disagreement over uranium enrichment

The US-Iran talks in Islamabad have failed to reach an agreement due to major disagreements over uranium enrichment, Axios reported.

➡️ In the talks, the US proposed that Iran halt uranium enrichment for 20 years.

➡️ In response, Iran proposed a much shorter period, i.e. single digits (1-9) years.

➡️ The US also wants Iran to remove its highly enriched uranium.

However, Iran proposed that these be reduced in stages under supervision (down-blending).

➡️ The talks have stalled due to disagreements over these issues, including the stockpile of uranium.

➡️ Now mediators from Pakistan, Egypt and Turkey are trying to reach a compromise before the ceasefire deadline.

Meanwhile, the US is increasing pressure by imposing sanctions.

➡️ Iranian officials thought a deal was close, but were surprised and angered by the US Vice President’s announcement at a press conference that he was blaming Iran and withdrawing from the talks.
